What is a UTM builder?

A UTM builder adds campaign labels to a destination URL. Those labels help analytics tools identify traffic associated with an external ad, email, social post or partner link. The builder creates the link; it does not install analytics, record clicks itself or prove that a campaign caused a conversion.

Use the tagged URL in the place where people will click it. Your destination website also needs the relevant analytics implementation and permissions to collect the campaign data you expect.

How to build a campaign URL

  1. Enter the full destination URL, including https://.
  2. Choose a source that identifies the referrer, such as facebook or newsletter.
  3. Choose a medium that matches your reporting convention, such as email for a newsletter or the applicable paid-ad option.
  4. Add a stable campaign name for the promotion.
  5. Use content to distinguish link placements or creative variants, then copy and test the finished link.

UTM parameters explained

ParameterWhat it identifiesExample
utm_sourceReferrer or platformnewsletter
utm_mediumMarketing channelemail
utm_campaignCampaign or promotionautumn_launch
utm_contentPlacement or creative variationhero_button
utm_termKeyword detail where applicablehosting_costs

Source and medium answer different questions. newsletter / email identifies both the referrer and channel. A campaign name connects that traffic with the particular promotion. Use term only when it has a defined purpose in your reporting.

For definitions and platform-specific details, consult Google Analytics’ campaign URL guidance.

Example: two links in one newsletter

Suppose a newsletter promotes a new guide. Both links can use utm_source=newsletter, utm_medium=email and utm_campaign=autumn_launch. Use utm_content=hero_button for the main button and utm_content=text_link for the link in the body. This distinguishes placements without creating two unrelated campaigns.

An illustrative tagged link is:

Keep one naming convention across the team. Lowercase values and a consistent separator help avoid accidental variations. Treat values such as Facebook, facebook and fb as separate choices unless your reporting deliberately normalizes them.

Check the link before launch

Open the generated URL and confirm the correct destination loads. If it passes through a redirect or shortener, verify that the final URL retains the intended parameters. Keep unrelated existing query parameters when they are necessary for the page to work. URL query syntax and fragment handling should follow the URL standard.

Use campaign tags for incoming external campaigns. For navigation within your own website, measure interactions with suitable analytics events instead of adding campaign labels to every internal link.

Once you have a consistent traffic naming system, use the break-even ROAS calculator to estimate the ad return your margins require. Campaign labels explain traffic; the calculator explains a financial threshold. Neither substitutes for reliable revenue measurement.

Common questions

Are UTM values case-sensitive?

Yes. Choose one casing and naming convention to keep reporting consistent.

Where do I find tagged traffic in GA4?

Start with Traffic acquisition and inspect appropriate session source, medium and campaign dimensions. Available reports depend on property setup and permissions.

Do UTMs create an SEO penalty?

Adding campaign labels is not a reason by itself to expect a penalty. Manage duplicate URL variants with appropriate canonicals and clean internal links rather than assuming every parameter URL will be handled identically.

Does a UTM link measure profit?

No. It labels incoming campaign traffic. Profit analysis requires reliable revenue, cost and attribution data.
